Much research has shown that family acceptance is key to the mental and physical wellbeing of LGBTQ+ individuals, especially youth. Obviously, actively and intentionally listening to your child and/or family member and understanding their experience is essential. However, finding research articles, parental support groups, and other organizations can be helpful so that your child and/or family member does not feel solely responsible for educating you on their salient identities. To read further about the importance of family acceptance and connection for LGBTQ+ youth, look at the SAMHSA guide, Family Acceptance Project, or PFLAG.
