Summer Book Club | Center for Gender Equity & The Pride Center

Sara Machiniak (AD of CGE) and Scott Burden (AD of Pride) present "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas, with supplemental readings from James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Shaun King, bell hooks, Audre Lorde, and more. It is a YA novel about a young black girl, named Starr, moving between two worlds: her poor black neighborhood and her wealthy suburban prep school. She sees her childhood best friend fatally shot by a police officer. Her friend was unarmed. What happens next is similar to what we see in the headlines nationally, and the direction of the novel rests squarely on what Starr chooses to say about what really happened.
