Reporting on Times of Trauma | Journalism

Journalists can experience vicarious trauma when reporting on disturbing events. Hear from award-winning journalists about how stressors on the job can impact mental health, and learn from a psychologist about approaches journalists can use to care for themselves. This is part of a two-day virtual webinar, open to all members of the Lehigh community, which encourages people to reflect on the impact of everyday trauma and pain in a punishing moment. Beset by intersecting pandemics — the novel coronavirus, white supremacist terrorism, wage slavery, a planet in crisis — to be alive in 2021 is to confront unavoidable and compounding trauma. For journalists, it is our vocation to bear witness to these horrors. For the marginalized, aggressions come from all directions. Our hope is to offer space for a reflective pause, in which trauma is confronted with supportive, honest, and open conversation. Register here: https://lehigh.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_V0mVdOhcRe6FKCgnI6IIZw Panelists: Jim MacMillan, Founder and Director of the Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting Cassie Owens, Staff Reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer Elana Newman, McFarlin Professor of Psychology at the University of Tulsa and the Research Director for the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma Moderators: Jennifer Midberry Mariana De Maio John Vilanova More information about both webinars can be found here: https://journalism.cas.lehigh.edu/content/reporting-and-living-times-trauma.

Faculty, Staff, and Grad Student Workshop: Identifying Gender Bias in the Workplace | Center for Gender Equity

Because gender is all around us, it shows up in the behaviors, practices, and infrastructure of our daily work. Additionally, we know that we all have biases. Sometimes, however, we don’t know which ones we have or how those biases may be influencing our behaviors. Facilitators guide participants in conversations about where and how gender shows up in a workplace setting, allow participants to engage in scenarios (provided by facilitators), and develop tools for mitigating and removing bias. Book Drive for Nurse Family Partnership

Help us raise books for Nurse-Family Partnership! NFP is a national organization that aids low-income and new-time mothers on their journey into parenthood by providing each participating family with a specially trained nurse to help up until the child's second birthday. Along with additional support from a medically trained professional, NFP strives to provide resources to each family to ensure the successful development and growth of their child. With your generosity, you will be purchasing an age-appropriate developmental book to give to a family in need.
